Native Stars
Ethnographic Sound Project 2011 Teen Hirshhorn Museum ArtLab+ Washington D.C.
Native Stars is an ethnographic sound recording project with youth hip-hop, rap, dj, spoken word, and young adult artists of the Hirshhorn Museum ArtLab Noise Factory. I worked with Navorro “Moochie” Brown, Troy “Chill” Gray, Marquis “Mars” Gray, Stephanie Metts, Stephon “DJ KS” Moses, Renee Stinson, Joe “Hitman” Waker, Andre “Jus Dre” Williams, and Jon Williams to record and edit conversations, songs, ambient sounds, beats, and interviews from daily life in South East DC. The work was installed as part of the Visual Audio exhibition at Honfleur Gallery in Anacostia, Washington DC.
On January 10th, 2012, at 6:45 pm, Navarro “Moochie” Brown, a Native Stars contributing artist was fatally shot in South East DC, shortly after leaving the Hirshhorn Art Lab. This recording serves as a testament to his bright spirit.
