Rosemaling Iterations
painting series 2021 - present
For the past couple of years I've been learning and adapting the Scandinavian folk painting style of rosemaling. I first encountered and fell in love with it as a kid at my aunt’s house, which was full of beautiful Swedish folk art. I loved the fancy flowers that are like frosting. Rosemaling started out when Rococo drifted from mainland Europe to Scandinavia, and was adapted as a working class decorative art for homes and churches.
This craft began as a man's craft, done during the winter times between farming seasons. The tradition is now primarily carried by women. I started taking classes with Marilyn Edlund in 2021 and this fall joined the Western Rosemaling Association for a week intensive with teacher Gayle Oram.
